After graduating from a dental college and becoming a dentist, a dentist can continue his education for two or more years in a specialty program. There are six major specialty programs: Pediatric Dentistry, Orthodontics, Oral Surgery, Periodontics (gums surgery), Endodontics (root canals), and Prosthetics. In order to be accepted into a specialty program, the dentist needs to be in the top tier of his graduating class.
Dr. Charles Halterman is a Diplomate of the American College of Pediatric Dentists. Diplomate status requires successful completion of a pediatric dental specialty program accredited by the American Dental Association. Then, the pediatric dentist has to successfully pass written and oral examinations, present case histories and pass a site-visit examination. Worldwide there are just over 1,300 Diplomates of the College of Pediatric Dentists.
